Sun Shines on an Early and Hotly-Contested Trip to the Pool

SwimmingMatch Update:  Swimming

The swimming finals are underway this morning as competitors are launching themselves into a glistening new 50 meter Olympic length pool – and the next stage of their journey at the Invictus Games 2016 in Orlando Florida.

The new pool in the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex is temporary and will be dismantled after today’s finals, but the achievements of the participants in the pool will leave a lasting impression in their lives and among families, friends and loved ones – and in wider society – about the abilities of wounded, ill and injured servicemen and women.

With the warm sun shining down brightly on the pool participants surged through the waters chasing a total of 87 medals in the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, and mixed 4x50m freestyle relay events.

The competing nations included Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

The Canadian coach said the journey to the Invictus Games was the most important achievement for participants.

“This is the Olympics of sport for most of the participants here,” he said.

The British businessman and sporting entrepreneur and supporter Sir Keith Mills, who worked closely with Prince Harry to plan and deliver the inaugural Invictus Games in London in 2014, was among the guests who presented medals to the participants on the podium after their events.
