Moment of Invictus Emotion as Prince Harry Presents UK’s First 2016 Gold Medal to Power Lifter at HP Field House
The men’s lightweight powerlifting final of Invictus Games Orlando 2016 this morning had everything, from stirring personal best performances, passionate crowds, and an atmosphere of high drama and excitement in a showdown that featured some of the strongest athletes at the Games.
The event also had the touch and presence of Royalty with Prince Harry, the patron and inspiration behind the inaugural Invictus Games in London in 2014, in attendance and cheering on competitors including two UK lifters.
Micky Yule, who won the gold – the UKs first for Invictus 2016 – said he used the energy from the crowd – which included Prince Harry calling out support from the stands for Yule — to secure victory on his last lift.
In an emotion moment, the Prince later presented the gold medal to the power lifter from Edinburgh, Scotland, who said there was no one else whom he could have wanted more to present him with the medal than Prince Harry.
“If I could have picked anybody, it would have been him,” said Yule, who is expected to represent Great Britain at the Paralympic Games in Rio later in the year.
“He (Prince Harry) is such a supporter of all injured servicemen worldwide now and I’m sure everybody looks upon that. He puts a lot of pressure on people, high people, to make sure the boys are looked after. I’m sure we’d be in a worse place without him.”
