On December 24, 2015, the Northwest Florida Daily News featured an excellent article featuring Captain Nelson and his family.
“I remember waking up and just being happy to have another day to spend with my wife, and a few months down the road to be able to see my daughter being born,” Nelson recalled. “I remember just feeling blessed.”
Journalist Kelly Humprey notes “”Blessed” might not be the term most people would use to describe Nelson at that moment in time. The Air Force intelligence officer was on his third deployment to Afghanistan when a 107 mm enemy rocket slammed against a wall in the building where he was sleeping. Shrapnel tore into his body, resulting in multiple spinal fractures, bruised organs, serious tissue damage, and two collapsed lungs.”
“As part of his rehabilitation, Nathan became involved with the Air Force’s Wounded Warrior Program. He has learned to throw a discus, and hopes to compete in the Warrior Games and maybe even the Invictus Games next year. Both events provide Olympic-style competition for wounded or severely ill veterans and active duty members.”
