Match Update – Sitting Volleyball – May 10, 2016
Its time for the Sitting Volleyball semi-final at Invictus Games Orlando 2016, presented by Jaguar Land Rover, at the ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex (Tuesday 10th May 2016).
The HP Field House is packed with spectators in anticipation of a fantastic semi-final this afternoon and final this evening. There was riveting action in the preliminary rounds with Holland, USA, UK and Georgia all advancing through tough groups to reach the final, for info click here.
Georgia won Pool 2 in the preliminary rounds unleashing a fierce attack against Estonia and Denmark to advance to the semi-final versus UK. Besarion Gudushauri, Georgia’s captain, told us what the success has meant for his team:
“It is a fantastic opportunity to play in finals at the Invictus Games, the team and I are focused and determined to win a medal in Sitting Volleyball, we have the teamwork and skill to be champions”
The UK team won Pool 1 with ease beating France and Afghanistan in straight sets, the British powerhouse will now face an up and coming Georgia team with a hunger for glory.
USA won Pool 3 seeing off Canada and a strong Australian team, they will now face the European might of the Netherlands, who narrowly beat Jordan in a tiebreak in the preliminaries and put a massive shift in to beat Denmark after losing the first set. Olaf Geurens, of the Netherlands team told us about their grueling victory in the final stages of the last rounds:
“We played as a team and we worked hard. The third set [against Denmark] was pretty brutal, but we pulled together at the end. Now onto final rounds, we showed in the Denmark game we have what it takes to be champions”
